How carrying a backpack changes your balance
A pack does more than add weight. It moves your centre of gravity and adds a load that can swing, and Tai Chi offers a clear way to think about both.

Take your pack off at a lunch stop on a long day, stand up again, and for a moment your body feels oddly light. You might even notice yourself tipping forward slightly, as if something that was pulling you back has suddenly let go. In a sense it has. For the last few hours your body has been quietly adjusting to a weight strapped behind it, and those adjustments do not switch off the moment the load comes off.
Most walkers think of pack weight in terms of effort: a heavier pack makes the hills harder. That is true, but it is only part of the picture. A pack also changes where your weight sits, how your body arranges itself to stay upright, and how it responds when the ground does something unexpected. Tai Chi is built around exactly these questions – where the centre of gravity is, how the body lines up above it, and how movement stays controlled – so it offers a useful way of thinking about what happens when you shoulder a load and set off.
Where your centre of gravity goes
Standing without a pack, your centre of gravity sits somewhere in the middle of the body, roughly level with or a little below the navel, and above your feet. Tai Chi pays particular attention to this area of the lower abdomen and treats it as the place movement is organised from. You do not need any particular belief about it to find the idea useful. It is simply where your mass balances.
Put on a pack and the combined centre of gravity of you and your load moves backwards and, depending on how the pack is loaded, upwards. Your feet have not moved, so to stay balanced your body has to bring that combined weight back over them. It does this mostly by leaning forward. You probably do it without noticing, and a modest forward lean is a perfectly reasonable response.
Where things become more tiring is in how that lean is made. If it comes from folding at the waist, or from the head and neck drifting forward, the muscles of the upper back and neck end up holding the posture all day. If it comes more from the ankles, with the body staying relatively long from the hips to the head, the lean is shared through the whole frame. Tai Chi’s interest in alignment is helpful here. It is not about a rigid, upright posture, but about a sense of the body stacked sensibly over its base, so that no one part is doing all the holding.
If carrying a pack leaves you with persistent back, neck or shoulder pain, that is worth raising with a qualified professional rather than working around it on your own.
A load that moves
A pack is not a fixed part of your body. It sits on straps and padding, and it can move independently of you. On a smooth track this barely matters. On rough ground it matters a great deal.
Think about stepping across a gap between two rocks. Your body starts to move, but a loosely fitted pack lags a fraction behind, then catches up and carries on a little further than you intended. The same thing happens when you turn sharply, stop suddenly on a descent or twist to look back along the path. A load that swings adds its own movement to yours, and your balance has to deal with both. Loose items inside the pack, a half-empty water bottle or a flask knocking about in a side pocket all add small shifts of their own.
Tai Chi puts a lot of emphasis on moving as one connected unit, so that the arms, torso and legs arrive together rather than one after another. That idea carries over directly to walking with a load. The aim is for the pack to move when you move and stop when you stop, rather than behaving like a passenger with its own ideas.
Setting the pack up to move with you
Most of what makes a pack feel stable comes down to fit and packing, and none of it is complicated.
- The hip belt. A well-fitted hip belt sits over the top of the hip bones and carries much of the weight there, close to your centre of gravity, rather than hanging it from your shoulders. If the belt has slipped down or ridden up around the waist, more of the load returns to the shoulders and the pack is freer to sway.
- Shoulder straps and load lifters. The shoulder straps are there to hold the pack close to your back as much as to bear weight. On packs that have them, the short straps running from the top of the shoulder straps to the pack body draw the load in towards you.
- The sternum strap. Fastened across the chest, it keeps the shoulder straps from sliding outwards and helps stop the pack rocking from side to side. It only needs to be snug, never tight enough to restrict your breathing.
- Compression straps. Cinching these down on a part-filled pack stops the contents shifting as you move.
- Heavy items close to your back. The usual guidance is to pack the densest things, such as water, food and cooking kit, close to your spine and around the middle of the pack, with bulky, light items like a sleeping bag lower down. Some walkers carry the heaviest items a little lower on rough, scrambly ground, where a lower load can feel steadier.
After adjusting a pack, it is worth taking a few steps and noticing whether it feels attached or whether you can sense it shifting. The fit also drifts over a day. Straps loosen, the load settles as food is eaten and water drunk, and a pack that felt stable at the car park may not feel the same by mid-afternoon, when tired legs are less forgiving of a load that moves.
Moving with a pack on real ground
The difference a pack makes to balance shows up most clearly in the places where walking stops being simple.
Stiles and high steps
Lifting a leg high to climb a stile or a tall rock step puts your weight onto one foot while the pack pulls backwards. Using a hand on a post or rail, bringing the chest a little forward over the front foot before stepping up, and making the move at a steady pace rather than in a lunge all help keep the combined weight over your support. On the far side, the extra weight on your back adds to every landing, so a controlled lowering is gentler than a drop.
Descents and steps
On the way down, the pack adds to the braking work your legs are already doing, and a load that sits high or loose can nudge you forward just as you land. Short steps and soft knees matter even more with a pack on. Walking poles can add points of contact and share some of the work, which many long-distance walkers find especially welcome with a heavier load.
Stepping stones, boulders and wind
Anywhere you need to move from one small foothold to another, a swinging pack makes each landing less predictable. Tightening the straps before a stream crossing or a boulder field is a sensible habit. On exposed ridges, a pack can also catch the wind, so a gust from the side pushes on it as well as on you. A slightly wider stance and shorter steps give your body a broader base to work with until the wind drops or the path becomes more sheltered.
Noticing the load as you walk
Much of the adjustment to a pack happens without conscious thought. A little attention now and then can show you where the effort is going. These are things to notice, not rules, and they are best explored on ground where you already feel at ease.
- Where your forward lean comes from: the ankles, the hips, or the neck and upper back.
- Whether your head drifts forward of your shoulders as the day goes on.
- Whether the pack moves separately from you when you turn, stop or step across a gap.
- How the pack feels after a strap adjustment, compared with a few minutes before.
- What it feels like to take the pack off at a stop, and how quickly your body settles again.
A pack changes your balance whether you think about it or not. Paying attention to how it does so is not about carrying less or walking more cautiously. It is about letting your body and your load work together, so that the weight on your back becomes something you move with rather than something you are constantly correcting for.
